The Japanese Combined Fleet that successfully achieved maritime dominance, after defeating the Russian Port Arthur Fleet and Vladivostok Fleet, sent their units back to their respective homeports of Kure, Sasebo and others to repair the damages caused by the battles and to replenish ammunition and supplies. Upon completing the necessary repairs and replenishment, a portion of the Fleet deployed again to the Sea of Japan and was assigned a patrol area west of Tsushima. At the same time, the rest of the Fleet continued to conduct hard training night and day and prepared for engagement with the Russian Baltic Fleet.
In the early morning hours of May 27, 1905, upon receiving the initial report from the patrol ship, the "Shinano-Maru" that the enemy fleet was sighted, the Combined Fleet that was assembled then in the Chinhae Bay area immediately got underway to intercept the Baltic Fleet off of Tsushima. The result was a fierce two-day battle and the Combined Fleet achieved a great and unprecedented historic victory. After this battle, the desire for a peace conference ensued and the Japanese-Russo War drew to a close.
